Duck for President!

With the presidential debate currently going on, along with many other elections, last week we learned about what an election is all about! Last week for reading, we read the book Duck for President. This is a fun book with the familiar farm animals from Click Clack Moo, where Duck decides to hold an election to be in charge of the farm and take the place of Farmer Brown. Throughout the book Duck eventually decides to run for president. We learned about important vocabulary words that we saw in the story. We learned about what elections, ballots, and candidates are!

After reading the book, we had our own election in the classroom! Everyone in the class received a ballot where they got to vote for who they thought would make a better president- Farmer Brown or Duck. After tallying the votes, we declared Duck as the winner! The students had a fun time voting and secretly filling out their ballots.

Along with the mock election, the students completed a reading response where they wrote about what they would do if they were elected to be the president. The class was very creative and thoughtful about what they would do if they were president. We had ideas ranging from making laws that require people to eat pizza and sweets everyday all the way to giving away money to the poor. This class would make lovely leaders!
