More Mystery Readers!

Over the past several weeks, we have had a few more Mystery Readers visit us in 1-Thomson.  We love a good mystery, and it's always very exciting to see who will walk through our door to share a favorite story with us!
Sophia's mom visited us to read a story that turned out to be a favorite of ours-The Day the Crayons Came Home by Drew Daywalt.  It really had us all laughing!  We also had Cyrus' dad visit to read How to Babysit a Grandpa by Jean Reagan.  This was another funny and entertaining story!
Today, we were visited by a couple more Mystery Readers-two people that are very special to me!  My sister, and my niece Sarah came to share a family favorite of ours, Giraffes Can't Dance by Giles Andreae.
If you are interested in joining us as a Mystery Reader, we would love to have you!  Email me at athomson@middletonps.org to schedule a visit!

Fun with Nonfiction Features

As we conclude our genre study of nonfiction informational text, the students wanted a fun and creative way to share their knowledge of nonfiction text features.  Using our classroom iPads, the students searched through some of their favorite nonfiction books to capture and label some nonfiction text features.  Using the app Popplet (a favorite of ours), each student created a map of their nonfiction features.  Take a look at some of their findings!  They have become nonfiction experts!

More Than Gold...

On Thursday, the students were excited to celebrate St. Patrick's Day.  As part of our day, we discussed and wrote about all of the things that mean more to us than gold.  Some things included parents, pets, friends, siblings, and favorite toys.  These lucky students really appreciate the people and things in their lives!

Duck for President!

With the presidential debate currently going on, along with many other elections, last week we learned about what an election is all about! Last week for reading, we read the book Duck for President. This is a fun book with the familiar farm animals from Click Clack Moo, where Duck decides to hold an election to be in charge of the farm and take the place of Farmer Brown. Throughout the book Duck eventually decides to run for president. We learned about important vocabulary words that we saw in the story. We learned about what elections, ballots, and candidates are!
After reading the book, we had our own election in the classroom! Everyone in the class received a ballot where they got to vote for who they thought would make a better president- Farmer Brown or Duck. After tallying the votes, we declared Duck as the winner! The students had a fun time voting and secretly filling out their ballots.
Along with the mock election, the students completed a reading response where they wrote about what they would do if they were elected to be the president. The class was very creative and thoughtful about what they would do if they were president. We had ideas ranging from making laws that require people to eat pizza and sweets everyday all the way to giving away money to the poor. This class would make lovely leaders!
