Reader's Workshop: Making Connections

Why do readers make connections?

This week during Reader's Workshop, the first graders in 1-Thomson have been busy making connections! We learned that making a connection can help us as readers because we can understand the story better.

Watch this video to learn about the three types of connections good readers can make!

In class, we discussed the three types of connections:
Text-self, text-text, text-world
Then, we practiced making connections during independent reading and shared them with the class.

Lastly, we ended with a literature share of "The Littlest Pumpkin" by R.A. Herman.  In this story, The Littlest Pumpkin was disappointed because no one chose him at the farm for Halloween. We then made a text-to-self connection about a time we were disappointed.

*First Graders: Share a comment! What was your favorite part of the story, "The Littlest Pumpkin"?  -OR- Can you make another connection to this story?

Friendship Pie

October is Bullying Awareness Month and September's theme at Fuller Meadow was friendship.  As part of our weekly Olweus class meeting, we discussed how to be a good friend.  The students enjoyed listening to the story "Enemy Pie" by Derek Munson, where the main character becomes friends with someone he thought was an enemy. Click the book below to take a listen to this great story on Storyline Online!

After discussing the "ingredients" for a good friend, the students created recipes for "friendship pies". See some delicious examples below!

Center Time is the Best Time!

Center time is one of our favorite times during the day!  The students love working with each other to practice the concepts they've learned in class.  It is a time to approach learning in various ways with the use of technology, hands on activities, collaborating with peers, and working with teachers!
Practicing addition, parts and wholes, and comparing numbers on number lines with Mrs. Pelrine!

Rhyming practice, RAZ Kids on iPads, and building our Apple Words with magnet letters
