Reader's Workshop: Making Connections

Why do readers make connections?

This week during Reader's Workshop, the first graders in 1-Thomson have been busy making connections! We learned that making a connection can help us as readers because we can understand the story better.

Watch this video to learn about the three types of connections good readers can make!

In class, we discussed the three types of connections:
Text-self, text-text, text-world
Then, we practiced making connections during independent reading and shared them with the class.

Lastly, we ended with a literature share of "The Littlest Pumpkin" by R.A. Herman.  In this story, The Littlest Pumpkin was disappointed because no one chose him at the farm for Halloween. We then made a text-to-self connection about a time we were disappointed.

*First Graders: Share a comment! What was your favorite part of the story, "The Littlest Pumpkin"?  -OR- Can you make another connection to this story?

  2. Making a connection: I was never picked to go on the challenge of the Topsfield Fair competition for climbing the pole. Just like when the littlest pumpkin didn't get picked for making a perfect jack lantern.

  3. My favorite part is when the pumpkin dreamed big dreams because it reminded me when I have dreams -Colin D.

  6. Hi Mrs. Tompson & 1st Graders!

We have been working on making connection during reading too. We haven't read the Littlest Pumpkin but it sounds like a book we should check out. I love the making connections video and can't wait to share it with my class this week.

    Keep up the great reading!

  7. Hi T-1! We've been listening to Apples, Apples, Apples by Nancy Elizabeth Wallace in our listening center. We were all able to make text to self connections because we went apple picking for the Kindergarten field trip. We did the same things as the characters in the book.

  8. Mrs. Scharffenberg, I remember when I got to go apple picking last year in kindergarten. Great example of a text to self connection. I will ask mom to read me the story you read in class, Apples, Apples, Apples. Hope you are having a great year! Please tell my cousin, Ben, I say hello!
